Porphyromonas gingivalis short fimbriae are regulated by a FimS/FimR two-component system

Porphyromonas gingivalis possesses two distinct fimbriae. The long (FimA) fimbriae have been extensively studied. Expression of the fimA gene is tightly controlled by a two-component system (FimS/FimR) through a cascade regulation. The short (Mfa1) fimbriae are less understood. The authors have recently demonstrated that both fimbriae are required for formation of P. gingivalis biofilms. Here, ...

Porphyromonas gingivalis fimbriae

Marginal periodontitis is not a homogeneous disease but is rather influenced by an intricate set of host susceptibility differences as well as diversities in virulence among the harbored organisms. It is likely that clonal heterogeneity of subpopulations with both high and low levels of pathogenicity exists among organisms harbored by individuals with negligible, slight, or even severe periodon...

A Two-Component System Regulates Hemin Acquisition in Porphyromonas gingivalis

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a Gram-negative oral anaerobe associated with infection of the periodontia. The organism has a small number of two-component signal transduction systems, and after comparing genome sequences of strains W83 and ATCC 33277 we discovered that the latter was mutant in histidine kinase (PGN_0752), while the cognate response regulator (PGN_0753) remained intact. Microarray...

Porphyromonas gingivalis minor fimbriae are required for cell-cell interactions.

Two distinctive types of fimbriae have been identified in Porphyromonas gingivalis. In this report, we demonstrate that minor fimbriae are involved in P. gingivalis autoaggregation and colonization. A mutant with a deficiency in minor fimbriae can bind to a saliva-coated surface but does not form microcolonies as the wild-type strain does.

A developmentally regulated two-component signal transduction system in Chlamydia.

Two-component systems allow bacteria to adapt to changing environmental conditions and may induce developmental changes necessary for survival. Chlamydia trachomatis alternates between two distinct developmental forms, each optimized for survival in a separate niche. Transcriptional regulation of development is not understood. The C. trachomatis genome sequence revealed a single pair of genes (...
